Inspired by José Arrue
From an early age, he showed a strong artistic inclination, undoubtedly influenced by his family environment and, as he recalled in his autobiography, by seeing paintings by artists such as Goya and Murillo that his father kept at home. At the age of 12, he began taking lessons from Antonio María Lecuona (1831–1907), and later studied under Anselmo Guinea (1885–1906) and Antonino Arámburu (1862–1927) at the Bilbao School of Arts and Crafts. Four years later, he travelled to Barcelona, where he trained at the Círculo Artístico and came into contact with Ramón Casas, Santiago Rusiñol and Miguel Utrillo, among others...
